Good help was so hard to find these days.

To be a mercenary in the Over Era was treacherous work. Even after the creation of the Universal Network, or UN, and the mercenary association sites that had come with it, the eye of the Directory was keen on any hand that didn't hold a weapon it hadn't personally paid for. The curious codes of honor that had formed among the spacefaring communities, and the use of sellswords, had mostly disintegrated as the Corporate overlords of the Colonies had readily embraced the power of the free market, assembling private armies of veteran troops, whose loyalty was to coin and coin alone, with which to threaten one another.

Yet despite the overall decline of the profession, there were still those who, for now, had avoided the greedy, grasping hands of the deep-pocketed entities, and whose reputations were still highly regarded.

So it was that a request would make its way to a certain Saiyuri Shimizu, fluttering across the algorithms and data pathways, ricocheting from satellite to satellite in the Colonial network as it searched for a recipient that met its senders standards. It was delivered through the Freelancer's Association Network, a third party contact that specialized in matching small-to-medium value clients that it had personally vetted with similarly vetted professionals. Doing away with the seedy bars and the under-the-table payments helped add a veneer of legitimacy to the oftentimes dirty - in many senses of the word - business of hired guns.

In the middle of her day, Sayuri's personal terminal - no doubt garishly decorated, a microcosm of the woman's own life - would begin to ring, its holographic surface indicating an incoming call from the FAN...
