"A monarch must have both compassion, and a heart of steel. Sir James... become a man worthy to lead the Kingdom. Worthy of your blood."

Virtus stood atop the wing-like Opus, gazing back at his comrades. His features were inscrutable, but his voice... guarded. Every word they spoke he listened intently, even as time grew short, his back ramrod straight as he stood in the void, magnets in his spacesuit's soles holding him close to the drone. Selene had been a disappointment, in his eyes - but as the young man had spoken?

It reminded him of better times. Of the King.

"And you, esteemed Arbiter."

He gave a dry, almost self-deprecating laugh, leaning on one of the stabilizers. Sir Franklin would have been proud - that much, he knew. It was hard to say which was sturdier: Charles resolve, or the Giganscudo he rode into battle - perhaps that was why it had been changed so much from before. Not a sword to cut down evildoers, but a shield to protect the weak.

"...Your kind words are wasted on the likes of me. Even so... I thank you. I will not forget them, nor the hard-fought victory won today."

As he spoke, his hand came up to his throat gently, a familiar gesture among their kind, like a knowing tap of the nose. Its meaning was simple, yet often lost on outsiders.

"You have your obligations... as do I."

A matter of honor. Duress perhaps, even. The telltales on the edge of the wing turned bright red, and he began to feel it shift under his feet, proton engines whining to life.

"When next we meet, it will be on the field of battle." He said, raising an arm in a salute that looked especially lonely, framed against the distant, infinite blackness of space.

"The only true value of conviction... is the steel it holds in its hands. Never forget that."

And like that, he was gone, the Opus units hurtling away, blinking out of existence until the Arm Stora as well, seemed to vanish in a flash of bright light. Even the wreckage left behind had faded, leaving no trace that they had ever existed except the memories of the two men, to what had been witnessed.

The recording of the events that had transpired earlier ceased. The moment of the Diamd's lance slamming into the Lunar surface was held on the main monitor of the warship. Seated at the center of it all was... not quite a man, but a projection thereof, not that any could have told from a casual lance. The grey, crisp of his uniform, his pale features, and overall appearance was indicative of his nature as a functionary, albeit one with unparalleled authority in the world. Not far from him stood Virtus, arms folded in contemplative silence.

"Well, that was... unexpected." Said the Aristarch, breaking the uneasy silence.

He was rewarded with a hailstorm of information, voices and texts flooding in from all the other nodes that had been observing the situation unfold.

"-subversion of temporal protocol-"
"-deserves to be atomized and his thoughtcore wiped-"
"Who will be held accountable for this? The Praestulor wouldn't have-"

Speaking over the din, the Aristarch continued:

"Censor Irkalla. Please deliver your report."

The clacking of heels upon laminated floors caused Virtus head to turn. Sure enough, she was here.

What unnerved him about Irkalla was her movements. Graceful as they were, at first glance he would have been entirely fooled that she was human. Yet, as the one in charge of disposal, deletion, and record maintenance that body was merely the avatar of a killing machine of the utmost efficiency. The blonde haired construct's voice, for once, however, was not full of its usual smug self-assuredness.

1613635519702.png

"It's as our scouts reported: He's destroyed the body." She said, tersely.

"There is no way we can correct this. It's completely unprecedented-"

"Hmph."

A barely suppressed chuckle escaped Virtus' mouth, causing the construct to shoot him a glare.

"Do you even understand what you've done, human?"

"Nothing a cog in a machine would ever understand."

Irkalla's eyes narrowed in contempt, and she opened her mouth- but a waved hand from the hologram caused her to stop.

"Let him speak."

"Aristarch...!" She gasped - but Virtus wasted no further time, speaking unhurriedly.

"I have no interest in returning to that life."

A collective murmur went up among the electronic cloud of onlookers. The Aristarch leaned forward with interest, giving what some algorithm somewhere had determined to be a sympathetic smile.

"Is that so?" He said, a hand coming up to his chin.

"For a moment there, I was certain you would choose to join them."

At least for that second, Virtus was grateful his face was hidden from view. The statement did not surprise him, but it already confirmed his suspicions about the engagement.

"I doubt that." He said, dryly.

The Aristarch, for his part, leaned back in his flickering seat once more, and spread his arms wide.

"Regardless, you've put me in a difficult position. Now, what are we to do with you?"

There was a long silence.. and finally, the masked man spoke.

"About what you said before..."

"You've made your decision?"

"I suppose I have."

Hisss...

His fingers closed about the latches at the base of his helmet, and there was a hiss of escaped air as the protective covering was removed. He'd needed it, for a while - or, so they'd told him. He was almost glad, at the time. A new face, a new name... He'd thought he could put everything behind him. But, after today's encounter? He wanted to retain at least some part of himself. It came off easily into his hands, and he breathed deep of the recycled air, watching the Moon - his home - fading away in the distance on the monitor.

He would return to it, some day. With tales of glory, treasure, and bravery, just as the knights of old once did. All his life, he had dreamed of such a life, unfettered by the petty politics and preening attention seeking of his peers. Now, destiny had seen fit to deliver it to him.

The road ahead was deep and dark, having never been trod by a mortal man.

"...I see." Virtus' proclamation that they would meet as foes brought a frown to Charles' face, and the Giganscudo's extended arm slowly fell to its side. Perhaps, though, now it was he who was showing his naivety in expecting that this lost soul would align himself with them so readily. "Then know that I will be here whence you return, and by my hand you shall find no success if you seek to harm our Kingdom."

And then, with a few parting words, he was...gone. Vanished, he and the damaged Arm Stora both. They would have to retrieve what was left of the ship, the debris that had been parted from the main hull with his initial shot. Perhaps it would offer some clue as to who - or what - held Virtus' chain. And the remnants of Vynatea...those would be carefully obliterated down to the last atom lest they risk the return of the crystalline tyrant.

"The Indomitable is underway. She should arrive within the hour." The gargantuan Fure-class was still little more than a speck in the distance, but all the same it had grown visibly larger over the course of their combat. With her a sorely needed host of Everglory's mobile weapons returned to further secure the Kingdom.

Given James' behavior in recent memory, there was a distinct chance the youth would try to bolt rather an than return with him to the lunar surface. Charles hoped that pointing out the proximity of the battleship - and her compliment of Larseilam-equipped machines, as they both well knew - would act as a deterrent. Not even the Genion could run forever against their capabilities...and James was too compassionate to harm his own countrymen by fighting back.

"Let us depart, ser Steelheart. Everglory is awaiting both out returns." There was a momentary pause as he weighed his next words carefully. There was always the possibility that spoken poorly, they would come back to bite him. "And know that as Grand Arbiter, it is my sworn duty to mediate while upholding the interests of all parties involved."

That was...adequate. With hope it successfully communicated his unspoken message: 'I will protect you from Selene's machinations.'

Please do not make this more difficult than it need be, young Steelheart.

James breath caught in his chest, Virtus' words no doubt having a much heavier weight and meaning than Charles heard. He seemed to have gotten a taste of his own medicine today, reminded of his coming out to Gerart nearly resulting in his brother choking on his food. He was glad to not be eating or drinking anything at the moment, he likely would have had an even closer exerperience. Just what did Virtus know? He watched the Opus units retreat, then vanish.

He turned the words over in his head, over and over, analyzing the odd pang of loss with the vanishing. He felt alone in a familiar way. Like when Enfield left... Alone in a sea of people who knew nothing about his true identity. No one to talk to or understand the corner he was being run down into. And sooner or later, Selene's faithful hounds would corner him against the cliff's edge and force his hand. He found himself oddly longing for the distressed knight's presence again, just five minutes for someone to talk to, to see all of him and offer some words of support or encouragement and advice.

Charles' ominous threat broke James from his thoughts. Why was he suddenly reminded of the time he knocked a kids tooth out as a child with his dad looming over him about to exact punishment? That was a feeling he most certainly did NOT want to feel at the moment. The Genion turned to face the Giganscudo. It was a good thing the metal could not betray the tension James felt, flight or fight already worming it's way to the surface forefront of his thoughts. But... an hour at best to escape? And then Charles would bring the hounds to bare, snaping at his heels and a fight for every mile. They'd over run him in time, for sure, even with the sphere's power. It would inevitibly lead to a fight.

become a man worthy to lead the Kingdom. Worthy of your blood.
The words echoed back again. James took a deep breath and relaxed his tense muscles. He forced himself back into his seat. If only Virtus knew what that blood had been over the centuries. But... James knew what it should be. And running away... fighting against his country men... neither would help or befit what he should stand for. He could do this. Someone believed in him as more than a backup plan or replacement for inevitable suicide. He wouldn't let Virtus down.

"In the interest of your duty and the position I find myself in," He spoke slowly, carefully picking his words, "I request that we converse here. There is much you do not know of my situation. I do not know the situation unfolding here right now. Several days ago a colony was assailed by our knights who were more than happy to kill me under Selene's authority. I cannot in good faith alight in Lunar territory at the moment. I trust you, I..." he paused, biting his bottom lip. The pain of admission leaked into his voice; A sharp pang of loss and hurt coloring his words with a strained hitch. His shoulders sagged slightly under the weight, his shamed gaze falling to his feet, "I can't trust my sister."

Thought it was not openly transmitted across the comms, there was something about the pause before Charles' reply that conveyed his deep sigh nonetheless. The Giganscudo jetted through the void toward him, but it did so slowly - unthreateningly. "...James." It might have been the first time the Arbiter had dropped the pretense of his station enough to call the younger man by his first name. His tone was softer than usual, as though the steel core that ordinarily formed the spine of his words had been wrapped in gentle silks to cushion their impact. Such things...were not normally a skill he was called upon to utilize, but it was a capacity he did possess.

Lifting one great hand, the Duro placed it gingerly upon the Genion's shoulder - though with the machine now reverted to its normal state, there was some hilarity in the difference of scale between them and how it dwarfed the recipient. "You understand why I must refuse. My mission in returning to Everglory with such haste is to secure the safety of the Kingdom and her people. I cannot do so from orbit." The Super's head twisted, gazing down at the lunar surface. It was true; he could not perform his duties here in space, even with the moon nearly close enough to reach out and touch.

"You know they will find you again should you flee now, and in such a case I can offer you only the justice of fair trial." Its fingers shifted with a metallic creak, a mechanical facsimile of squeezing the Genion's shoulder reassuringly. "I give you my word, as Grand Arbiter...," he trailed off into a momentary pause as he reconsidered his pledge, "No, as merely Charles Beaumont, friend and comrade-in-arms both, that I will not let harm befall you should you accompany me. I cannot truly right the misguided ills inflicted upon you without your own assistance."

"We will speak to Her Majesty, the two of us together, and truly put an end to this. Please." Dragging James kicking and screaming back the Everglory was not something he was particularly interested in doing, for both their sakes. The end result would be far more grim for the boy if he continued to rebel against Selene's authority; at least this way Charles could shield him from being immediately thrown in a cell when - not if - they caught up to him.

Despite Charles' efforts to be non threatening, James flinched at his name. The first time deviating from the norm always did, especially from superior officers, higher stations, and when they used a different tone than he was used to. Oddly, the same effect when his mom or dad called him by his full name no matter the tone. The size difference between the mechs, the reassurance and gentleness put into it... He'd admit it made him feel like a child being comforted after being bullied.

James sighed and closed his eyes, scrubbing his hand across his face. It had been worth a shot. His own fear had blinded him to the ongoing mess below. Damnit, that was selfish to ask. Well, there was nothing for it but to go along. He had a duty to his people, after all. Perhaps Charles did have the weight behind his name to keep the other knights from turning to attack him as well as whoever was assailing their home...

"Yeah, I wasn't going to run. I guess I can fill you in as we head down there. Given what I found..." He frowned, thinking of the Panikos. Waste of Genion's spare parts... But it needed destroyed. "Thank you, Charles. I appreciate you protecting me and sticking your neck out for me. To be honest I'd rather face a horde of DAMON alone than confront Selene in person with how she was last time I saw her..." He sighed, "Well. Let's get on with it then."

The Genion reached a hand out to pat the almost triple in size machine. It was so much like a child standing next to a very tall adult. James sighed to himself, Now is not the time. You are a mature adult and you will behave while your people are in mortal peril. He was sure that Merida and Gerart would have a sudden urge to laugh just at the mere existence of the thought of applying that description to himself. He was not exactly known for being a mature adult. And the Genion riding the Giganscudo's shoulders like a child getting a piggyback ride- while an amusing thought- would not exactly strike fear in the hearts of enemies. The Genion slipped from under the giant's hand, beginning the approach to the moon.

"I must be vague about why I ran away the first time with my room mate, for your own safety. Just... know Selene plans to sacrifice her life to use the sphere. She had also planned to force me to live in the castle, properly introduce me to society, and force me to marry a lady but that only had a mild influence on my actions. I'm not sure she really thought that part out much... how would it look if she revealed me then she died?" He grimaced, there was no way that would ever go well. "Anyway. I decided to get the sphere back before she could and keep it from her as long as I could. So... I went to hunt Gerart. My room mate helped me escape. We fled to one of the colonies, and while sneaking through the back to keep from being caught we came across a half assembled.... well, they named her Panikos, but she was built from Genion's stolen spare parts. DEI scientists. The knights attacked the colony, so I agreed to help them escape in exchange for transport to Earth."

He paused, shifting his gaze to his lap. Well, he might as well spill all the beans right? "Earth because Gerart and I... well... We kinda had a plan for years that if Selene tried to put either of us on the throne we'd bolt. It was how I was trying to track him...following the plan." He drew in a quick breath and continued on, trying not to let Charles get a word in on that stupid plan. "Anyway, Another force showed up fighting back against the Knights. Someone I met in a game joined the fray trying to help with the other force... And then Gerart showed up and some weird ugly ass crow mech... Gerart sheilded me and... well..." his cheeks reddened, the next part was hard to admit. A shameful taboo and secret that was supposed to be less known than his true origins. "I don't remember what happened between trying to protect Gerart and getting him out of there. Everything kinda just... went red." Much like his face. Thank the Lady the video feed wasn't on. That was the LAST thing he needed right now. Looking like a damn tomato...

"A-anyway. When I came back to my senses I beat back the crow, got Gerart and Liana out of there to the DEI ship..." He coughed, words picking up pace to quickly gloss over the next part as much as possible without lying. He was definitely ashamed of the betrayl he had exacted on the DEI crew. "And I'll admit my mood still wasn't too stable and I may have completely gone pirate and taken the entire ship and crew as captives. Destroyed the Panikos... My room mate is with the ship tending to Gerart's wounds. He's... not in good shape. But between Merida and Liana I'm sure they're fine! Holding down the fort and all that..." He half stumbled over his own words. Were his hands shaking? No, that had to be vibrations from Genion. He'd have to have Merida run diagnostics when they met up again. "I know what Gerart did was wrong." Damn, that shaking was in his voice too. Really needed to run that diagnostic. "But he did it because he knew what Selene was planning. His attempt on my life... was more like a mercy. You wouldn't want your little brother to be subjected to that kind of hell that they put him through with the sphere, right?"

The Genion halted, waiting until the Gigan was close enough to latch onto. He needed to calm down and recenter himself. "Sorry, I need a minute. This is better than you dragging me right? Or climbing up for a piggy back ride like I first thought of," He gave a strained joking chuckle. The Genion clung to the Gigan like a child to their father's arm. James closed his eyes and focused on his breathing. "Not sure if you gathered..." James spoke softly as he centered his emotional balance, "But Gerart gave me the sphere... When he broke me out of... er... that... berserker state."

That...was not an insignificant quantity of information to digest. Some of it Charles had known - although vaguely - while other portions he had not, likely on account of Selene herself being wholly unaware. Certainly she and by extension those around her had no inkling of the fine particulars of what the young man had been up to. He was simply glad of two things; that James had returned to them seemingly intact, and that he had not chosen to flee once more and force them to do this the hard way. Enfield, too...though he would never see eye-to-eye as James had proposed on the man's justifications, knowing that he yet lived brought a strange sort of comfort despite their last parting as enemies. Regardless, he listened intently and without interruption as his companion regaled his tale.

The attempt at humor did bring the slightest smile to his lips. It was good to know that his flight by night and the subsequent consequences, everything he had learned, had not soured James overly much. Things would settle in due time once they resolved the issue at hand.

His Queen had neglected to mention her intention to sacrifice herself. Curious. Perhaps it was the fact that Charles himself would have sooner had her clapped in irons for her own safety for saying as much than allow it to happen, as much as doing so would feel like a betrayal. The duties of his station were, unfortunately, quite unyielding and she knew that. The Arbiter's loyalty in protecting the royal family and country had run counter to their own wishes in the past, and it likely would do so again in the future...the near future especially, once they confronted Selene.

"I am truly sorry that you have had to suffer so," the Giganscudo extended its arm for the Genion to grasp, the machine one-third its size taking hold as they drew closer to the surface, "but at the same time I supposed that wondering it this could have been avoided in its entirety is nothing more than wishful thinking." His machine gazed down, pointedly fixing one great eye on James. "I trust that you performed to the best of your abilities given the circumstances. There is no need to be ashamed of what you perceive as failings so long as you learn from them." He chuckled, a display of brevity despite the mood, "Perhaps it appears to someone your age that I leapt fully-formed from the womb into the uniform I wear, but I can assure you that that is far from the truth. You and I are not as different as you might think." He hoped James would draw encouragement from the words - and they were true enough. He had been rambunctious enough in his own right at that age.

His tone turned somber once more however, "If all is well on the surface they will be upon us with great haste. There will be precious little time to strategize before we are forced to confront Her Majesty," Charles cautioned, "so I suggest that you get your thoughts in order before we arrive. It will not be long now. And if the fighting persists..." He didn't need to finish that sentence. James knew what would be necessary if those who threatened the Kingdom were still present, and knew that the Arbiter would be fully expecting him to fight alongside him.

"I have your back regardless."

James shrugged at the empathy, though he was greatful for it. "It's... Nothing new. I've had the issues since I was a kid, Dad tried to beat it out of me. Mom said I bit him a few times in response." He chuckled, "And hey I got a few new tricks up my sleeve from the weirdness of that fiasco. Win win right?" James crossed his arms over his chest to lean back in his seat. He closed his eyes to focus only on his breathing and the sound of Charles' voice. He had to learn to do this with distractions after all.

Fission Mailed. James snorted and fought back a chuckle, unsuccessfully. "Oh man, I have GOT to go find photos of you when you were younger. I'll bet you still have the chronic RBF even when you were younger." He chuckled and sighed, opening his eyes again to stretch, "I don't think we're different. You're just older and in a higher position of power. I'm not afraid of you and I trust you, I just also respect you and your authority."

James cracked laced his fingers together and turned them palm out in front of him to crack his knuckles. What would be waiting them on the surface? How would they pinpoint who was an enemy and who wasn't? It had to be a mess down there. "If I think about confronting her now I'll probably render Genion less than useful. I unfortunately have to be in a certain state of mind to use the sphere and it sucks." He took a deep breath and released it slowly, letting Charles' unfinished sentence hang in the air. "We'll have each other's backs. Uh... just... Try to let me know when you're going to bum rush someone. I'd hate to catch you up in an explosion. Hopefully though, we wont need to bust out the new tricks. Right partner?" James smiled and gave the terminal an affectionate pat. He steeled himself, focusing himself into that precarious knife blade of balance once more. The Genion released her gargantuan escort. She balled her fist and directed it into her open palm, the fingers curling over the back of the fist. Her very stance spoke ready for a fight.

"Let's do this!"
