OE 102: January 5th
China, The Forbidden City,
en route to Directory Beijing Air Base

The limousine was manufactured to exacting specifications. It glided through the streets of the Beijing in near silence, cutting through the night like a dagger, the street lights glinting off its flawless surface.

Its interior was luxurious - dark leather seats that were comfortable, yet without affording the person occupying it total rest. Gentle lights gave it the impression of a professional bar, and indeed a cut-away section revealed a variety of alcoholic concoctions... as well as other, stranger chemicals in wrought glass vials, some of which contained shadows that seemed... Almost alive. Bulletproof, one-way windows were of course, standard on such a vehicle, and upon closer inspection by a seasoned eye - magic circles carved into the glass panes.

Few could begin to comprehend how their influence was so pervasive as to have touched on even this small detail.

They went by many names - and had gone by many in their thousand-year history - but organization known in certain occult circles as the the Church of Volkruss had never seen its power wax as strongly as it did this day.

A tall, eastern man with broad shoulders and shoulder length, oiled, jet-black hair sat across from Tian Di, dressed to perfection in a creaseless black and red suit, his features currently obscured by a raised newspaper - one that, upon closer inspection, appeared to be little more than tabloid trash... Yet he seemed completely absorbed by its contents, and had been for the duration of their trip so far, giving its contents absolutely rapt attention.

His name was Lao Xin Fang, and he was one of the most powerful people on the world. True to that description, he didn't appear on any sort of lists as such, and in fact went to great pains to do so.

As far as the rest of the world was concerned, he was a quiet, efficient member of the Directory Board, representing the Eastern hemisphere, who kept the tax payer money rolling in, and had carved out a position of prominence for China in the new world order - and with it, great prosperity.

So it was he, in association with the young woman across from him, had overseen the construction of the single most expensive and fantastic mobile weapon ever designed by the hand of man.

Their relationship was a curious one, as he had served not only as her mentor, but also as a council and confidant who recognized her importance... and had built the organization around the two of them as consequence.

Lao did not strike people as the kind of person who would lead what amounted to a Doomsday cult - in fact he was polite, well mannered, and seemed to be almost embarrassed about the whole thing... Yet, he was a magus beyond compare, one whose innvoations had brought them tremendous boons. Today was to be his crowning achievement, the unveiling of their greatest weapon... And with it, a means to not only weather, but to soar above the coming storm.

At length, Lao glanced over his magazine at the young woman, as if noticing her for the first time, and cleared his throat.

"We'll be arriving soon, Tian." He said, folding the article and folding it under his arm.

"After about every delay conceivable, the day has finally come." He noted with a grateful sigh; asking with a small smile:

"How are you feeling?"

A young girl was present across from the much older man. Her small frame, black hair and black eyes gave her a quaint image, though her body was covered in a black cloak with gold trimmings. A golden headdress decorated her head, though she could go without it. She gazed outside the window of the car, watching the many buildings of Beijing. Tian Di sat slightly uncomfortable in the Limousine. Despite its luxurious interior, Tian Di couldn’t stand being in a car for such a long time. One wouldn’t think a person would act so calm, knowing they’re a sacrificial lamb to some greater cause, but as far as Tian Di can remember, that’s been her purpose in life, and what her nonconsensual-pact was enforced on her.

But at the same time, nothing could be done about it. She had more or less already accepted her fate. Because of that, life has been easy for her. The cult damn well near treats her like a queen, which she can’t really complain about, other than that it gets troublesome with being too famous. Tian Di prefers to avoid the paparazzi.

Across from her the old man continued reading the newspaper, seemingly fully engrossed by it. This man was her mentor, the leader of the Church of Volkruss, and the closest thing she’s had to a father figure in her short life. She doesn’t remember anything before the age of six, when she was taken in by the church, though she knew this man wasn’t her biological father.

While he was a father figure, she could never draw emotion to connect that feeling. While she was grateful for how generous he’s been, her feelings towards him are more so of gratitude only. Or so she thinks.

“Feeling? Normal I guess.” Tian Di shrugged at the question, giving an approximate estimate of her situation. “By the way, where are we going? What’s the day today?” She responded back with a question.

Lao's expression was kept carefully indifferent as the girl asked her question. He could never be too certain when she was being fastidious, or when she was legitimately out of it. Goodness only knew, he thought, what being steeped in that much dark prana could do to a person. He had learned mastery of the dark arts when he was young, true - but not as young as she. While she was regarded with dread and awe amongst their ranks... In his mind, she was still only a child, albeit one afflicted with the same curse as the rest of them.

"Today, the Vessel of our Lord - Your chariot - is complete." He said, steepling his fingers and leaning back into his seat.

"At no small expense, I might add."

That, he thought glumly, was an understatement. There wasn't a string he hadn't pulled to get the funding necessary for the Vessel's completion - if it had cost even a single credit more, he would have been reduced to selling lemonade and plumbing toilets to finance the construction further.

"We'll be overseeing the last of the benedictions, and prepare it for the conflict to come. It - and you - shall be our sword in the coming trials." He explained; "The portents predicted a coming catastrophe... One that may provide the conditions required to resurrect our Lord. If so... it would be the realization of our thousand-year goal."

May, he emphasized quietly to himself. The portents had been unusually cloudy recently, as if the future itself were... Uncertain, causing even the church's most talented shamans to be less anvilicious in their doomsday proclalamtions than usual.

In Tian Di’s head, she almost questioned what kind of thing a doomsday event would be perceived by a cult that worships a literal god of destruction. Regardless, she shrugged the thought and continued looking out the window.

“The Granzon? It’s finally done?” The secret project of the Cult that’s been in production as far as she could remember. She was amused at the tenacity of Lao, having dropped so much money on it. Were the Cult’s finances okay?

It wasn’t her problem though.

“So I take it today will be test runs?” She asked.

"Indeed." Said Lao, evidently pleased that the young girl seemed to have returned to her senses... For a minute there, he had been worried. This was not a day that would be kind to any mistakes that were made.

"Just a battery of basic tests, ensuring compatibility is optimal... Nothing to be concerned about, for one with your abilities, but these things are important."

With that, he returned to his magazine, seemingly signaling that the time for their brief conversation was over.

"For our cause, of course."

***

At the Beijing air base, their car was waved through with nary a glance - the soldiers on duty that saw, and were familiar with it, shuddered to think of whatever could be behind the wheel, but the smokiness crawling ever so faintly against the windows indicated it was anything but human. The limo pulled forward, past row after row of Huckebein Mark II Mass Production Types, crouched down in their inactive modes, as well as a handful of fighter craft and tanks, until at last it reached a hangar located all by itself at the end of a long runway.

A pair of robed figures moved to open the doors for the two of them, and stepping out of the vehicle, Tian Di would immediately sense that they were in a place of great magical potency - a leyline, a place where Prana gathered naturally, and was being harvested for their benefit. Dark spirits - invisible to those without their powers - drifted in and out of reality, gibbering softly, mouthing faint curses as Lao led the way, his lips moving faintly as he warded the security spells that were in place, letting the pass between the ghoulish specters that served as better guards than any mortal.

The massive double doors at the front of the building parted, and interior lights flickered on, to reveal, sure enough... The chariot.

The Granzon.

It was surrounded on all sides by struts, catwalks, and pulleys that had been used in its construction - as well as darker, more eldritch looking contraptions that defied conventional description, all brass and made using peculiar angles that hurt the eye to look at. It bristled with barely contained dark energy, and the multiple magic circles drawn carefully about its feet had served to suffuse it with the essence of their Lord to an absolute degree.

Members of the Church busied themselves about its feet, making final adjustments, and Lao paused briefly before the hustle to address her, albeit quietly.

"Magnificent, isn't it?" He remarked, arms folded behind his back.

Tian Di walked a few meters behind Lao, taking note of the various magical devices in place as they walked into the hangar. Tian Di quickly realized the Mobile Weapon present in front of her. The Granzon was surely a sight to behold, it towering over the two humans in front of it. Tian Di was shocked, but slowly regressed to a more solemn tone. What standing before her wasn’t recognized as a weapon or a technological feat. Certainly it was a magnificent sight to behold, but for her?

“...Just the world’s most expensive coffin…” She murmured under her breath.

Tian Di held a melancholic air around her when dealing with the Church’s agenda. She wasn’t against the Church to any extent, and her loyalty wasn’t questioned by anyone. She well recognized her role in the grand scheme of things, though she couldn’t say she was happy about it.

“I’ll proceed to the cockpit, tell me what needs to be done and I’ll do it.” Tian Di turned to Lao, her expression plain, but confident.

Lao nodded, and indicated for the young woman to proceed, turning his attention to a pair of robed attendants, who were buzzing about pushing forms into his face. A short trek up an elevator, and the stomach of the fearsome blue machine opened before Tian Di, inviting her inside. Within, she could already feel that it was the nexus of the gathered dark energy, pulsating through its very being.

The cockpit of the Granzon itself was as complex as one could expect. Fortunately, she had been briefed on it beforehand, and the simulators provided some measure of familiarity - but the real thing was still a different beast. As she began the start-up sequence, she may have noticed a commotion beginning to erupt below...

In the distance, an angular shape broke through the clouds as it descended slowly, electricity crackling across its frame as its stealth system disengaged. It was a Stork Class, a wide-winged Armored Module Carrier... And it was headed directly for the hangar. The Stork's forward hatch opened, and within, several pairs of lime-green eyes gleamed to life in the darkness. The boxy forms of the machines - MaskLions dropped from the Stork in complete silence in organized single file, Tesla Drives flickering to life as they fell into a flying V formation just below the aircraft.

Lao's voice crackled to life over the Granzon's intercom, his tone surprisingly level given the situation.

"There's a problem."

Tian Di picked up the unknowns on Granzon’s radar, and quickly understood the situation. She hastened through the start-up procedure of the Granzon, and the robot came to life, its eyes flashing with a aura of darkness to them. The various restraints and locks on the Granzon released their hold on the mech, and it finally took a step forward.

“Tian Di, engaging.” She didn’t wait for permission, and proceeded outside the hangar, turning to face the approaching enemies.

Tian Di was fully aware of the capabilities of Granzon and the ability it has to manipulate space and time, though she remembered the instruction to not overdo it, else it might affect her negatively. She didn’t know the full extent of how bad it could be though.

“Target… lock.” Granzon clenched its hand as dark energy began forming in the shape of a sphere, purple-colored lightning centering around it. The physical air around Granzon darkened significantly, as it pulled energy, light, from the surrounding area. The orb shot out and formed a line of several spheres aimed at the descending mobile weapons, and the carrier they came from.

Granzon took a bracing stance as energy began forming at its torso, before a a bright yellow beam shot out, further intensifying as the shot went through the line of dark spheres.

“Haaah… chiLD…” a voice rang in Tian Di’s head.

A secondary beam shot out from Granzon, much more powerful than the first, reaching out towards the enemies.T The second beam brought forth greater destruction than the first.

A brief image of a mechanical abomination flashed before the cockpit screen of the Granzon, and Tian Di finched at the sight of it, petrified by the sheer presence of it.

“...” Tian Di was breathing heavily, both mind, body, and spirit exhausted from the events that just happened. She couldn't move her body so she remained in the cockpit.

As the Granzon brought its weapon systems online, the response from the attackers was both immediate and frantic. The MaskLions suddenly dove, coming close to the ground, as the Stork attempted to raise its altitude - but, the effort was too little, too late. The Distroyon Break lanced out, shredding the tarmack as gravitational forces tore it asunder, and punched a hole clean through the offending aircraft. The second blast consumed it utterly, vaporizing it with barely a sound. Not even debris was left to fall into the ocean as the clouds parted behind where it had been struck, leaving a hole that bored a clear path to the stars.

"...Magnificent." Breathed Lao, even as others around him hurried to save what equipment they could, the cult leader stood still, awestruck by the sight before him. Truly, he thought, the Granzon was every bit the masterpiece he had envisioned it to be!

The MaskLions resumed their assault after only a brief pause - the two in the rear, orange machines, slowed, and along their shoulders, two pairs of boxy barrels folded down. The heavy-duty railguns tracked the Granzon, and a quartet of slugs lanced out with an electric snap, aiming to smash apart the Armored Module's chest compartment.

The remaining three - these, colored a dark purple, began to close ranks. Each one brandished in its hand an M90 Machinegun - an older model that had once been standard equipment on Directory machines, and these blazed to life, raining down a hail of bullets towards Tian Di's machine.

As Tian Di was unable to move, the first railgun slug slammed into the Granzon, although the shock allowed her to snap back to reality. Quickly grasping the situation, Tian Di skirted to the side to evade the remaining railgun shots, and retaliated with a Gran Beam shot out from the head of the Granzon.

Granzon then next held out its arm in front of it, creating a wormhole before it, and with its other arm, created a second wormhole, pulling out a sword from a different dimension. Instead of evading out of the way on the incoming machine gun fire, Granzon simply allowed the bullets to enter the first wormhole. Granzon’s thrusters ignited as it proceeded forth to attack the MaskLions at a horizontal angle with its sword, in attempt to cleave through multiple, while simultaneously opening a wormhole from a separate vector, where the previously fired bullets exited from, targeted at the enemy units.

Surprised that the speed the Granzon was able to put on, the leading MaskLion didn't have enough time to respond, and the Gran Worm Sword cut clean through its chest in a shower of sparks, causing its two halves to clatter harmlessly to the ground. Tian Di's slash also managed to sever the right arm - and weapon - of one of the attackers, causing it to stumble as it struggled to regain its balance.

The remaining MaskLion, undeterred, dropped its machinegun and produced from its hip a mechanized blade, its segmented teeth roaring to life as its swung the chainsaw-like weapon straight at the Granzon's chest, looking to capitalize on the damage done earlier by the railgun slugs.

As the MaskLions in the rear took aim with their deadly railguns, the ground beneath their feet began to shift, causing their thrusters to flutter with alarm. Two pairs of arms extended from the concrete, seizing their ankles, as beady red eyes began to form from the tarmac lights. In the distance, Lao, with his palm placed against the ground in a makeshift magic circle, chanted eldritch words, willing the Demon Golems to life. Their grip tightened, begining to crush the legs of the two Lions, even as they attempted to gain altitude, sparing Tian Di their bombardment... For now.

Granzon formed a sphere of dark energy in its free hand, and shoved it outward to intercept the incoming knife. The dark sphere was a small space currently being manipulated as strong gravity pulled all things toward the center of the sphere. A controlled black hole. Should the MaskLion’s weapon or arm make contact with it, well, it’d be one arm short.

Once the Masklion in front of her was taken care of she would move on to the currently immobilized enemies in the distance.

The MaskLion swung - and its arm vanished into the black void. It continued, carried by its own momentum forward, crashing to the pavement below. Its now-one armed ally leapt forward, catching it in mid fall, the two damaged units rocketing away. They got about halfway down the runway before suddenly pausing... and detonating into twin plumes of flame, as scores of Shiryo Souhei - hovering, flickering, life-hungry shrouds clad in rags - descended upon them, tearing the machines limb from limb.

The remaining two MaskLions - the railgun equipped types - struggled to break free as the Demon Golems continued to rise out of the concrete, holding them firmly, even as their weapons chewed through the creature's hands. Escape, it seemed, was not an option.

“Let’s end this.. Shall we?” Tian Di turned her direction to the remaining two Masklions and floated over to them. Granzon dropped its sword, where it fell into a wormhole, returning it to where it was previously.

“You’re either an idiot or the bravest person on the planet.” Granzon held its hands out in front of it, dark energy forming in a large ball. The energy shifted and swirled in the hands of Granzon, before by pulling apart its hands, the orb of darkness splitted into two.

“Either way, only suffering awaits you.” Tian Di looked down on the Masklions and spoke with a pitiful expression.

Granzon dropped the two orbs on top of the two Masklions, and once reaching them, they rapidly expanded into a dome, completely enveloping the two enemies. Within these domes, gravity was increased to pointed where one could forget about ever moving. So long as the domes were there, the Masklions wouldn’t be able to move. The pressure wasn’t enough to kill a person, but with a single command, Tian Di could adjust the force as she pleased.

“Lao, do we want to interrogate them?” Tian Di asked.

"No, that's not necessary."

Lao's voice came in loud and clear over the Granzon's systems, the older man rising from his crouch on the runway as his various summoned creatures began to recede back into the ether, back into the dark seals that had been placed upon them. All around Tian Di, the latent prana of the place rippled with pleasure, as the souls of the dead pilots were dragged into the blackness as well... An offering to their dark Lord.

"I suspect I already know their origin... And besides, this is a perfect opportunity to send a message to our would-be assailants."

The two machines were completely paralyzed, held under the dome, the gravity forces crushing their armor like paper-mache. Their thrusters no longer pulled against it - perhaps the pilots were dead and unconscious, or had merely given up.

"Finish them."

“Right…” Tian Di replied.

Granzon held out its hands palm up and slowly began to close them. As the the hands slowly closed, the gravitational pressure in the domes increased as well. Slowly and gruesomely the Masklions caught inside slowly began to crumple, armor parts and the body slowly becoming deformed and crushed. If the pilots were still alive, one may hear screams from their cockpit, as their limbs and body as well became crushed as the cockpit shrank in size. With a final tightening of the fist, clenching strongly, the gravitation pressure maximized, instantly annihilating the mobile suits.

Tian Di took a deep breath and landed Granzon on the ground. As the fighting was over and her Adrenaline returned to its normality, fatigue kicked in both mental and physical, as she passed out in the chair of the cockpit.

As Tian Di fell into the darkness of slumber, her prana reserves taxed for perhaps the first ever time in her life, a strange feeling would have overtaken her.

She was... sinking. Sinking into the dark... Into a deeper, more meditative state.

It would not have been the first time.

Her feet touched cold, wet stone. Something wet scuttled away underneath, into the shadows.

Before her, at the center of a myriad of strange circles inscribed in ancient, glowing runes, an ethereal form shimmered. It had the horns of a ram, rising atop a featureless white mask, save for a pair of glowing, ocher eyes that were like blazing coals, alight with the fires of Hell...

It had appeared before, but never quite this... real. As the alleged time of ascenscion drew nearer, it had become clearer and clearer, coming closer and closer.

Even for their kind, communing with the dark being was not without danger. There were many stories of those who had drunk too deeply, too greedily, and had been taken by it whole.

55CECF6B-310F-4176-868E-50D1BE4E85DA.jpeg

"aT laST."

It spoke. The voice was both familiar, and yet otherworldly, a slurred mix of tones that stirred an ancient, primeval fear in those that were unfortunate enough to hear it.

The God of Destruction, Shiva Volkruss... The one that existed "between places".

Between places!

Lao had spoken of it before: the realm just outside their own, a pocket of dimensional space, where it had been sealed away by some event long ago. Even so, it was very much alive... As much as something that cannot truly "die" could be, at least.

The temples and rituals that their cabal dabbled in were able to open small holes into this space - but even these pinprick-sized gaps in reality were enough to suffuse the surrounding area with its dark essence, causing them to rot and decay. In the deeper, darker temples, buried far underground, the very stone itself was so suffused with the essence of Volkruss that only the strongest and most resilient of thier number could avoid being taken by its creeping corruption.

It was in one of those places that she found herself in now... one of the nameless lost temples that had fallen so far into the blackness that it was now part of the being itself. Crumbling pillars and walls that dripped with black, corrosive substance - a monument to decay, cast in a flickering, unnatural dim light.

The walls and stones bent and warped at unnatural angles, and sneering, leering faces that appeared only briefly, only to disappear, like a trick of the light.

"EvERytHING. EvERYthING hAS PeRIShED."

Before Volkruss, it held a miniature globe - a microcosm of the planet Earth. Only, this one was not blue - no, it was cold, grey, and dead.

"NoTHInG. ThERE is NOthing LEft."

The being extended a semi-real claw, expanding the view of the cosmos outward. A pitch black sky, a galaxy of nothingness, where even the stars had gone out.

"NoTHinG... ExcEPT yOu."

The mask turned up, as if noticing her for the first time. The walls seemed to close in around her, and there was a vague sensation of something serpentine tightening about her throat-

"Now... DIE...!"

***

Were Tian Di to awake, she would find herself returned to her chambers in the heart of the Forbidden City, safe and sound...

For now.
