Edge of Martian Orbit
11:05 Local Time

A Peregrine painted in Starseeker colours stood out from the void of space. The Brigadier II had been freed from its combat role and stripped of many of its weapons, but it still carried a deadly cargo. One perhaps more dangerous than any mobile weapon when used properly.

Diplomats.

It's pace was quick but carefully measured, breaching Mars's atmosphere above the supposed capital of the planet before beginning a slow descent. Just slow enough to gauge the forces on offer without being impoilte about it. They'd called ahead, but that didn't guarantee a peaceful welcome - and the subtext of force deployment often told tales people would rather hide.
Message sent days prior said:
Greetings.

The Starseeker Combine wishes to extend its hand in friendship to other new arrivals in the Earth Sphere, and discuss the possibility of a trade agreement or assistance should you require it.

One of our transports is on an approach to your landing site with a diplomatic mission and some additional aid supplies. Please reply promptly with additional landing instructions or requests, and we will do our best to accomodate.

-Captain Aurora Caeks

Most of the bridge was manned by Bioroids, but two figures stood out among the identical mass of metal faces. One human woman, the so-titled "Primary Officer" of this force. Kathryn Marsh was still clad in a suit of powered armour despite the relatively safe environment, but otherwise smiling cheerfully. And the ship's current Captain, her brow furrowed as she looked on the city below them. Captain Aurora Caeks was one of the rising stars in the newly-formed combine military, having commanded several human-alien combined operations while also being one of the lucky few to survive the destruction of the Tantra. Unfortunately for her this also came with an irritating companion. The human whose actions had catapulted her up the ranks was being used as a figurehead, and that necessitated her holding a higher rank. A ceremonial rank, but it was enough to allow her to hang around on the bridge of their ship and ask irritating questions. Questions that she had to answer, because upsetting the girl would waste even more of her limited time and mental energy.

"So what are we even dealing with? I tried asking the engineer you had on the Valsione what a 'Shura' was and he just shrugged at me."

"I'm.. not too sure."

It was a hard admission to make, but Aurora's tone was enough to shut Kath up for now. The girl seemed to assume she knew everything - an illusion she was happy to keep up - and the admission that this was an unknown had given her pause. Perhaps that fear of the unknown would force her to think. Kathryn was startlingly effective when she wanted to be, but coaxing the girl into applying herself was one of the hardest challenges she'd ever faced. What could have been a source of consistent excellence had turned out to be flashes of brilliance from a deliberately dimmed bulb.

"Circle forces have attempted to probe that ship before, but all we were able to establish was that the species inside was hostile to outside contact. We've established they're talking to the Martian population, and a decision was made to begin diplomatic contact. You are here as the human representative, whch means you have to be careful what you say to them. No quips, no insults."

She'd long gotten used to Kath's questions at this point, trying to pre-empt as many of her remarks as possible. It was an imperfect solution, but minimizing the amount of time Kathryn spent talking was better for everyone involved. Heaven forbid she start causing trouble when it came to actually meet these 'Shura'.

"Right, right. But then why did you kit my machine up for punching and stick those big gauntlets in my cabin? I'm pretty sure power fists aren't normally a part of negotiations. Unless..."

Kath's mind went wandering on its own, and Aurora was content to leave her to it. She personally didn't consider this likely to succeed, and for once it seemed like her 'Superior' was thinking in similar directions. Should negotiations go south that girl would be one of the few things able to keep her alive - a terrifying thought. But what other options were there under the circumstanes?

Martian Surface, Olympus Mons, Mariner City
11:15

Looming figures stood across the surface of Olympus Mons, surrounding the human city settled atop the ancient volcano. Days ago these figures stood facing the miniscule Martian forces, animalistic faces haughtily staring down the meager opponents; now, the giants milled about Olympus' plateau, fires and intricate tents set about their feet. With a distinct lack of bloodshed the beastly machines had been allowed to settle for a time, the tales from the Hellas basin about these mad gods having travelled quickly.

Inside this building, a mass of people had been hastily settled in a board room that was just too small for their numbers. Men and women wearing tribal masks or covered in strange markings quietly sat and stood about the table in the center of the room, meanwhile four men stood at the head. The people's faces and demeanor showing varying degrees of boredom and impatience.

Suddenly the door to the boardroom opened and a man wearing fairly casual business attire. All eyes in the room quickly darted to the new arrival, causing the him to cower subtly as his hands tightened their grip on a digital tablet.

"Mr.-er, Lord Sin," the man said, correcting himself to avoid any possible ramifications with the warriors. "I apologize for calling you here on short notice. We have received word from researchers in the area about a transmission being sent to the black pillar. We believe it's meant for you." The nervous man awkwardly cleared his throat. "Shall I read it?"

As if in slow motion, the messenger saw a scowl present itself on Zan Sin's face, staring him dead in the eyes. "We're warriors, not savages," the Shura said tersely as he stood up and approached the man. "Give me that." Zan snatched the tablet from the man's rigid but limp hands, the man, frozen with fear, simply stood bolt upright as it happened.

Zan read over the transmission text, scanning over the brief message a few times. "What does it say, Master?" Silas inquired. "It's from some people calling themselves 'the combine'; apparently they want to shake hands with us new neighbors- isn't that nice... Do we know them?" Zan turned to look at Venas. "Unlikely. I have no recollection of such from our records, and with such an ostentatious entity I would surely know of it," he answered, arms crossed and eyes closed.

"Well then, I suppose we'll go ahead and introduce ourselves," Zan said with a grin. "You!" He pointed at the official, causing him to tense up once again. "Get me through to that craft."

"...Seriously though, why the big fists? I look more like an extra from an action flick than a diplomat."

"It was eventually decided that trying to make you imposing was easier than making you look respectable."

And far more fitting to your skillset.

Aurora stopped herself from voicing the second part of that statement, but the implications still hung in the air. Presumably above Kathryn's head. It was difficult to tell what was going through her mind at any given moment at the best of times, and the lack of any reaction reinforced her beliefs about the girl's ignorance.
"Alter your ship's route to the base of Olympus Mons. We will prepare for your arrival there and send delegates to meet in person."
When the response came through Kathryn was already reaching for the microphone before the transmission had even ended, only stopping when Aurora turned to glare at her. Promising - normally the woman would have just continued if her goal was just to cause frustration. Instead she seemed confused.. faintly offended, even?

"What? I'm supposed to be leading this whole expedition, I should respond! I was just going to thank whoever it was for telling us and say we'd be there in about half an hour."

An accurate prediction. And a surprisingly polite response. Maybe some of those lessons had taken root. Aurora allowed a small smile, although it was difficult to mask her irritation at the backchat. Projections on the monitor agreed with Kathryn's guess, and the lurch as they changed course passed without issue.

"That's reasonable. How did you calculate our arrival time?"

"Basic physics? I was looking up orbital drop data ages back. We're high enough up that it's not like changing our landing spot will change how long it takes to get there."

"Good work. Just.. remember. We're not here to start a war. Please don't say anything unless you're asked a question, and do your best to look interested."

That, at the very least, should come naturally. Understanding when Kathryn had 'tuned out' of a conversation was difficult, and catching her out harder still - she seemed to pick up enough to answer a question in the moment even if the entire conversation had gone in one ear and out the other. Perhaps it would be enough to ensure this instance of first contact went along smoothly.

"We've altered our course as instructed! Expect our landing party in about thirty minutes earth time."

Olympus Mons.

Kath had never been to Mars. It was always on her to-do list, but between all the conflicts her plans had just.. been kicked down the line. Repeatedly. But now she was here, ready to lay her mark on the planet!

..Kinda. But negotiating a peace treaty was still pretty good!

For such a large ship they'd prepared a small honour guard - something about good impressions. Four Bioriods flanking Kath and Aurora, all clad in suits rather than having their metal plating out in the martian air. She didn't fully understand the reasoning behind it, but it did change the profile of their group quite a bit. Instead of having the robots stand out Kath herself was the oddity,

The new gauntlets were oddly weighty compared to the rest of her suit, in a way that felt deliberate. Some of it was plating, the rest.. she could already hear Aurora's voice in her head. "Think before you gesture. How you hold yourself affects how others perceive you." Just another attempt to control her. Kath couldn't blame her technically-but-not-really boss for trying to keep her in check.. but this entire diplomatic mission seemed to have kicked her paranoia into overdrive.

She couldn’t let it trouble her. For now Kath just smiled and walked down the ramp, matching pace with the ‘Honour Guard’ and shooting Aurora a little nod. This was her part to play - smiling and waving while pretending to ignore all the cloak-and-dagger diplomacy.

…maybe not waving if she was supposed to look professional.

As the craft made its slow descent, the various Shurashin milling about the perimeter of Mariner City made their way to Olumpus' mesa edge. Cats, bats, moles, and bulls, the beastly machines lined up along the cliffside and eyed the new arrivals. In the center of the formation, the four Shurashin of Zan and his compatriots pushed themselves to the front.

Zan, with Venas by his side, strode across the red earth to meet the Combine delegates. The pair's bare chests and haughty demeanors contrasting with the ambassadors. Zan eyed up the lot of them, his discerning gaze lingering on the fists of the battle suit, meanwhile Venas was aloof as always; if his eyes met with anyone it would seem as if he was looking through them.

As the two drew close, Zan spread his arms out. "Welcome to our little slice of this planet! -at least for the moment," the red eyed Shura called out. "I am called Zan Sin of the Crimson Flames." Venas stiffened up, crossing his arms and standing at attention. "And I, Venas Soldam of the Raging Storm."

The two kept their introductions rather frank, as if gauging the Combine before offering any more platitudes or information.

For the moment.

Aurora took the threat for what it was - a warning to move carefully. The dozens of mobile weapons surrounding them only cemented that fact. If these 'Shura' wanted them dead, the sheer numbers would be able to overwhelm them long before the Shuttle could take off again. This would take tact. Deference, but not groveling.

Neither of them seemed diplomatic, so her first assumption was that of a military leader. While this was a pleasant revelation in some ways, warlords were always a bit more unpredictable than a true diplomat. She just had to hope Kathryn wouldn't mess this up...

"My name is Aurora Caeks, and I come on behalf of the Starseeker combine in the hope of establishing a point of contact between our groups. This is Primary Officer-"

Her hopes were immediately shattered when the girl talked over her, stepping forward and thrusting her hand out towards the Shura..?

So many machines... it was more like a crowd of spectators than a military force. Watching them, and watching their bosses make first impressions too. Right now they were on a massive stage, putting on a performance for the watching Shua. To Kath it felt like the show was as much for their own benefit as to make a point to the Combine - A show of strength.

She could work with that. But it wouldn't stop her from trying to make friends! Kath's first response to Zan's gaze was an eager smile and a nod, and when Aurora started to introduce her she cut the woman off - stepping forward with an exaggerated stretch.

"Kathryn Marsh, defender of the Colonies. It's a pleasure to meet you, and we thank you for your hospitality!"

Kath finished her greeting by thrusting one arm out towards Zan for a handshake, ignoring the glare Aurora was shooting her. Sure, she'd spoken out of turn. But the aliens were focusing on her, and that was the perfect chance to take the initiative and cut past all the platitudes. If they'd wanted proper diplomatic overtures they'd have sent diplomats, not bare-chested beefcakes!

"Of course!"

Zan emphatically returned the gesture while bearing his usual, casually sinister smile. There was a resounding clap as bare hand met metal. The grin on the Shura's face steadily grew as his grip tightened, as if he were pleased at the strength of the material. The force of this gesture was perhaps less than what may have been expected, or perhaps more. It didn't take a Shura to see that Zan had more where that came from, let alone the way the thin Martian mist seemed to be rising and twisting about his form. "What good would it do to accept a helping hand without a word?"

Venas' gaze shifted from his cohort and back to Aurora. "To be frank, just what is it you intend to render to us, and what do you think you're getting out of this?" Zan, evidently satisfied with his display, retrieved his hand. "Quick to the punch today aren't we, Venas?" He was met with the usual huff and crossing of arms. "Rather one to talk yourself," said Venas. "Forgive my brashness l, but we don't exactly get approached like this very often, much less right after we arrive somewhere. I find that charity is scarcely without due."

The Shurashin in the distance seemed to perk up as their masters poised and posited. Doubtless many among them could hear the conversation.

Kath was giving as good as she got with the handshake, careful to squeeze back just enough to make it count. Not that she thought it could hurt the wall of alien muscle, but.. diplomacy. Showing weakness felt like a bad idea and she'd never hear the end of it if being aggressive made things go south.

"Right!"

She actually opened her mouth to respond to Zan's affirmation, quickly cutting it short to a polite acknowledgment. It took her a bit longer than she'd liked to realize the question was rhetorical. She turned to look to Aurora as well, seemingly listening carefully to her response. She was in the dark as to the exact specifics of what was going to be proposed - Her own fault. Should have paid more attention in the briefing.

Being directly addressed was.. pleasing to Aurora, in a way. It saved her the trouble of having to nudge Kathryn, and meant they were smart enough to see the figurehead for what she was.

"Mutual assistance. We share certain enemies, and can provide you with weapons and machines to use against them alongside other military aid. Our ship is loaded with food and medical supplies as well should you need them - standard procedure for a first contact scenario."

Her tone was blunt. Full disclosure had its own risks, but trying to hide things moreso under the circumstances. If they disapproved of the offer it could hopefully be renegotiated. Harder was phrasing the offer of aid in a way that did not cause offense. Aurora allowed herself a smile as she continued, weighing up precisely how much she wanted to disclose.

"Combat telemetry and recordings from such battles is payment enough for the branch of the Combine I- we represent. Such data is of high value to us, and will allow us to tailor future machines to your species and personal preferences. We would also both benefit from a military alliance and coordination of course, but that is unrelated to my current offer. And something better negotiated in an embassy than a crater."

She had other offers to make on top of this one. But it was better to start small. If they accepted the first and liked it, other deals could be made. A point of contact established. A way to communicate that didn't come with an undercurrent of fear that one of those fists might come rocketing towards her face.

Zan and Venas turned to one another and exchanged a look of silent understanding.

"We don't need any weapons," Venas said coldly.

"And we don't want any machines," added Zan, almost indignant.

The red eyed Shura narrowed his eyes and straightened up commandingly. "Tell you what; this planet came in my color, but it's just not my style, you know? I've got more important things to do than kick up dust all day."

"Here's what we'll do," The Shura said imperatively. "We don't plan on keeping this rock for ourselves; we're nomads, you see. So you can follow us around and get your data and then do whatever with what's left." Zan grinned in his usual up-to-no-good fashion. "All I want out of you is to get me somewhere that I can send a message to this system."

To the side, Venas nodded curtly and simply looked on in waiting.

"Perfectly acceptable. I'll have to make some arrangements for a broadcast, but if you're willing to record in advance we can get your image into the solar system significantly faster."

A little thinner than she'd expected, but a planet in return was payment enough. This deal was imperfect but more than sufficient, and so Aurora gave Kath a barely-perceptible nod. All she had to do was give her assent. Surely there was no way she could ruin this.

"Deal! But I wanna fight alongside you guys at least once or twice. Watching's all well and good, but you can't get the feel of a battle unless you're in the thick of it!"

Oh no.

Kath ignored Aurora's look of growing horror as she continued, flashing the woman a wink once she was done. They wanted a deal, they'd rejected the other terms.. the current arrangement sounded like it'd just end with them fighting at some point. The logic added up for her... not that she was doing to say it out loud. Aurora could hear the explanation later once she'd had some time to cool down.

Offering mechs might have made them a bit mad, but offering to fight was totally different! Hopefully.

"My Valsione just got some upgrades and this is as good a chance as any to test them out. Hope you don't mind~"

'Data collection' sounded like the first step in never being allowed on a battlefield again - bonus points if this forced the issue. Aurora couldn't force her to backtrack on this one without undermining everything she'd set up!
