L4 Colony
16:05 Relative Time

Farron and Co had arrived on L4 not but an hour ago, having come this way to meet with one of the branch companies of the Longinus Family. Though he wanted to get to discovering the betrayers and recovering the missing cargo, he couldn’t completely ignore the business that needed to be done either, and since the passing of his parents, Farron had become the head of the largest trading conglomerate of the entire earth sphere. He and his crew had checked in at “La Lux de Luxuria,” the highest-rated and most expensive hotel in the colony, having the penthouse suite to the lot of them.

It was coincidental that one of Farron’s uncles was the director who managed the company that owned the hotel, but perhaps for he who had wealth beyond imagination, it was the bare minimum standard of living that was ‘suitable’ for him.

But all in all it was stuffy to him. The formalities and rigidness of the business world were suffocating to him, but alas it was his duty and role.

Vella and Kara decided to spend the rest of the day at the hotel; likely indulging themselves in the various spas and food services the hotel had to offer. They honestly deserved it, as the Valstork lacked such luxuries within it. It was primarily a trading vessel after all, despite all the weapons and systems built-in.

Farron, however, had more important matters to attend to. His meeting was scheduled in a couple of hours, so he left early to head to the venue. He was dressed in a well-fitted suit, with black slacks and jacket, white shirt, and red tie. He looked prim and proper, but somewhat ‘normal’. Alongside him was a ‘girl’ dressed in a similar manner.

Z1, the sentient android Farron had found in the asteroid facility, now acted as his secretary and assistant, her inhuman processing speed naught but a great aid to the business Farron was required to do. She was dressed in a similar manner, with a white shirt, black jacket, and pencil skirt. She wore black heels that raised her up to Farron’s height, and she walked with a graceful stride.

Frankly the two were probably like giants to those around them, standing far taller than the average person did. It was both amazing, yet slightly intimidating, the two giants dressed in suits either exotic businesspeople, or mobsters.

Either way it was of little importance to Farron, he was just happy to finally be able to relax a bit and go at his own pace, for what little time we have. He found his way into a park and found an empty bench to sit on, spreading his arms out on the bench and relaxing back into the seat. Z1 stood at the side of the bench next to Farron.

“Reminder: The Business Meeting with Avaana Rolenza is scheduled for 18:30. At our normal walking speed of 5.0 kilometers an hour, it will take 20 minutes and 48 seconds from our current position.”

Z1 spoke in her slightly monotonous voice.

“So we have about two hours to kill?”

Farron replied.

“Correction: One hour, forty-nine minutes, and 12 seconds.”

“You don’t need to be so specific about it... “

Farron’s mood dropped.

“Statement: All I do is in the benefit of my Master.”

She replied with a blank look on her face.

“Right, Right…”

One of Farron’s pastimes was people-watching. He found it enjoyable to relax and watch other people go about their days, their lives. Friends having fun together, lovers being romantic, families playing together… It was probably about time for him to get married anyhow. Only a couple more years and he’d be thirty. He could probably do it at any time, his fiance-to-be was likely more than willing, but the whole fiasco with his parents’ death and the missing cargo have more or less but things on the backburner for now. Perhaps in a year or two he’d be ready to formalize things.

That said, there it was hard to resist when a beautiful woman caught his eye. He looked at the white-haired girl walking by and loosened his tie, before waving to her from his bench.

“Hey, might you be free for a moment?”

He asked in a friendly tone.

"Well I certainly would hope so! It would be a rather crummy vacation if I wasn't free to choose what I do with my time." Laura huffed with amusement, giving Farron a sharp little grin as she eyed him over, evaluating him with expert eyes.

He was completely at odds with his surroundings, lazing about in a bench in the middle of a park in a business suit with an emotionless assistant next to him. Not to mention the colony they were in. They had just been assailed by a horde of Lamalice, were overwhelmed by refugees and had even had first contact with the Circle. The tension and atmosphere in the city was not one where an official was expected to just lay around in a park. Not to mention the undercurrents likely caused by an ongoing coup.

Not a local then, or a very relaxed one, which suited her just fine. Not that she had a suit on, she would never be caught in one of those. Utterly dreadful things, those, she had had enough of a dress code long ago.

Should be easy enough to dispose of should the need arise.

"My neck will start hurting very quickly if you stand up." She informed him cheerfully as she walked to the pair and their bench, tail curling around an arm holding a drink with a...straw on it momentarily before falling back to swing with her pace.

"So, is sitting in a park and hailing the passers-by something you do before a meeting to ease your nerves, after a disastrous meeting to cheer yourself up or something you do at any point in time just because?" She asked, taking a sip from her straw.

Farron chuckled at the foxgirl’s quip, completely unexpecting as enthusiastic a response as that. It seemed she was not only a face, but had a personality to back it up. Eyecandy was good and all, but shallow women were not exactly the most ideal.

Especially Gold Diggers.

‘Foxgirl’. The word came to his mind as he took a second look at the girl, the notable ears and tail she took no effort to hide. Having spent very little time in the earth sphere, he knew little of whether this was ‘normal’ or not. It was a moot point in all honesty though. Between having been born on a spaceship and living on mars, and having an android companion, what more was a fox girl anyways?

“If that’s the case then perhaps you’d prefer to take a seat?”

Farron gestured to the opposite end of the bench, roughly a 1 person gap between the two should she sit down.

“I feel like we’d get odd looks if you were ever-standing while I sat.”

He joked casually, adjusting his tie once again.

“Consider it… a past-time of mine. The hustle and bustle of the city, watching others go about their day, how they act, their actions, making assumptions about others; it stretches your creativity and expands your imagination while serving as study for your analy-”

Farron realized he was dragging on his explanation, and stopped midway through.

“Ah, sorry. I got carried away there.”

He scratched the back of his head and smiled.

“Ah, allow me to introduce myself: I am Farron Longinus, this is… Z.”

Perhaps it was strange to call her by her codename to a stranger, so Farron cut it short and made it more of a nickname. Z1 gave Farron a sideways glance, before placing her arms in front of her and bowing to the girl.

Recognition flashed in Laura's eyes at Farron's name, but that was it. "Laura Woodweaver, professional magician and a master of parlour tricks both grand and minor. A pleasure to meet another pair of ordinary nobodies." There was definite mirth in her eyes as she grinned at the two.

"Ah but I don't think I'll be joining you on the bench it seems a rather uncomfortably tight fit which is, of course, very uncomfortable. Besides, who cares about odd stares?" She raised her eyebrow at him. "Those'll be a fact of life either way, might as well give them a different reason than ears and a tail. Not that people talking like this is all that odd as far as I know."

She began to stretch her arms, arching her back as she did so, before collapsing towards Farron and Z, leaning towards them. "I'm not one for people watching myself." She whispered conspicuously, her free hand covering the side of her mouth. "Most people are far too boring. They take things far too seriously to notice their lives passing them by as they endlessly toll their lives away because it is what they are 'supposed to do', forgetting that life is meant to be enjoyed while you can until it is far too late."

Straightening, she rapidly batted her eyelashes at them as her ears flattened, the very picture of innocence - were it not for the honed-to-perfection nature of the expression. "So I like to mess around a little bit every now and then."

Farron smiled at her introduction, affable to her self-proclaimed titles and sarcasm. He knew not whether she was telling the truth or not, but he had no reason to disbelieve her. Playing along with her was rather enjoyable in fact.

“Well in any case, I’ll stay sitting. A pleasure to meet you, Laura.”

She was definitely a free spirit, blissfully ignorant of what others thought. It was a commendable trait by all means; he was almost a little envious of it, but alas in the business world, looks are everything. It was only in times like these that he could be ‘free’ and take a step back.

“And a philosopher as well. Quite the skill set you have.”

Farron spoke jokingly as she finished her whispering. He pulled out a brown can from his bag and cracked it open with a nice hiss. It was a Cafe Au Lait he bought from a nearby vending machine, quite frankly a staple of his diet. He took a sip and held the can loosely in his hand that rested on the top of the bench.

“So what exactly is your go-to when ‘messing around’? Talking with random strangers who approach you?”

He leaned back on the bench and gave an almost mischievous look to the foxgirl, though spoke in a cheeky manner, jabbing back at her for her statement before.

"Not a philosopher. Philosophers are the driest and most unfun people I've ever had the displeasure of knowing that wouldn't know relaxing or honest work if they decided to team up and beat a philosopher to pulp with a cucumber and a teaspoon! No, it's all just "Methinks that yethinks that I thinks that ya exist therefore I exist because methinks but you don't for I dunno yethinks therefore Ende is real because we exist and world exists and He has to exist cuz reality exists and must be observed which proves that a higher power exists."" Laura was rolling her eyes faster and faster as she mimicked a philosopher, adopting a deeper, self-important punchable voice for it.

With a snap of her fingers her gaze focused on Farron again. "That or its "From this ethical point of view this thing is wrong, ah but from another ethical standpoint it is correct ah but from yet another ethical view both of the aforementioned ones are downright idiotic and fit only for the worst of all hells therefore all ethical questions and problems are impossible and painfully obvious to solve at the same time!" Philosophers are self-important and arrogant that think far too highly of themselves. They just hoot around and look down on the rest." She shrugged, as if to say 'what can you do.'

Then she snickered.

"My 'messing around', as demonstrated, covers quite the wide variety of things depending on my mood." She winked at Farron before - loudly - slurping from her straw.

Farron laughed as Laura went on a rant about Philosophers, something really igniting a passion of sorts in her, or so it seemed.

“True, there are those who have their theories shoved so far up their ass they can’t hear others, but perhaps you’re .”

Farron took another sip of his coffee.

“Philosophy needn’t be all about existential problems of existence and whether not a ‘higher power’ exists or not. How one lives their life too is a philosophy. And as one who so passionately defined her own lifestyle, for without a better choice of words, you may be more of a philosopher than you think.”

Farron paused for a moment.

“Or something like that.”

He gave a jesting chuckle. Maybe he sounded like one of those self-righteous philosophers now. He might've sounded like an idiot, but he hardly thought about his words before speaking them. He was only going off what came to his mind at the moment, a sort of free-flowing conversation without any rhyme or reason to it. Perhaps it had been awhile since he met someone who was so free-spirited. Between Vallen, Kara, and Z1, he was surrounded by people who were far too serious for their own good at times, so talking with this girl who was so vibrant and colorful was a breath of fresh-air for him.

“So for what reason did you decide to come here of all places for a vacation? While the colony certainly has its nice points, it isn’t exactly what one would call a ‘tourist destination’.”

It was an apt time for changing the subject, and what better conversation than to learn more about this foxgirl who stood out so strongly.

Laura shrugged, but didn't immediately answer.

Her first instinct was to fabricate a little white lie, but that would be boring, uninteresting. She was on a vacation, there really was no need to hide anything. Especially from Farron and his android assistant.

She wasn't here on business after all, and was planning nothing. Nor would the two pose much of a threat to her, she callously judged with another quick look at them.

So instead, she grinned once more, her wildest one she had graced Farron with so far.

Something akin to the truth then.

"Normally Colonies definitely wouldnt't have a single spot in any well made tourist attraction list - they're big lumps of metal that are overcrowded and treated like dirt, of course they aren't - but with the current unfolding situation this colony we are on right now is the single most interesting place within the Earth sphere." Laura explained, gesturing around them with a grand sweep of her arm.

"Think about it. Its packed to the brim with refugees with nothing to their name. Those refugees are scared, they're uncertain of their future - that they don't have in the first place now, and most of them have little to no fortune to their name. They were just under siege by creatures of their nightmares, even if that challenge was overcome."

"And now there's aliens. Their already uncertain future has become more so, What's more, the Directory forces are systematically being taken care of, there's a coup, a change of power, going on behind the scenes. Look, you can notice the signs if you know what to look for easily enough."

"But there's also a reliable, shining lightrays of hope shining on the weary souls of everyone that is here. Heroes. The notable figures that have fought on their side in recent conflicts are being raised on a pedestal, whether they know it or not. Whatever will come out of this spectacular powder keg, it will be supported by these propaganda figures. They will be the lynchpin of their fighting will and morale. Both their strong and weak point, and I am curious to know who the first heroes of this era are and what they are like. Nowhere is as interesting as here right now."

Her eyes were boring into Farron's with intensity that would almost force him to look back.

Then she snickered and dismissively waved her hand. "Or perhaps that all is just a grand lie with maybe some kernel of truthful observations hidden somewhere in them!" She laughed, her tail swinging wildly. "Maybe the truth is just that I want to be as far away from my work partner as possible and I know that she would never come here and that's all!"

She mock gasped, almost looking fearful for a second. "Should I be worried that you'll take me away now? Clap me in irons and throw me into a dark, cold and damp prison cell? That all this was just a ruse to get me to confess my dastardly deeds and plans?"

Yet even through it all, there was not an ounce of worry or nervousness, or at least none that could be deduced.

“Hmm…”

Farron looked intently at Laura as she went on her long spiel about the colonies and the recent happenings of the world. Whether she was telling the truth or only part of the truth, the information was useful to Farron in giving him points to look further into. Having only arrived in the earth sphere recently, it was difficult to get caught up on months of news and other events, and having to dig into his connections to read about more classified information was a pain in itself.

Though considering he came from Mars, would he be an ‘alien’ too?

“Quite the interesting tale you’ve spun there. Perhaps you should consider becoming an author too.”

Farron jested. He returned Laura’s look with his own, and as she peered into his eyes, she could see a spark of ‘passion’ in them, but also a sort of cloud of mystery that obscured any true sense of him.

“Whether or not your story speaks truth, I see it as welcome information, in one way or another. I only came here not but a month ago.”

Whether ‘here’ referred to the colony or the Earth sphere, he left vague.

“Hey, hey, handcuffs and prison cells? Don’t tease me with a good time.”

He joked nonchalantly.

“But jokes aside, I have no reason nor desire to detain anyone… Or well, almost anyone.”

He averted his gaze and gave a slightly concerned look to the side, perhaps a sudden change from his prior demeanor.

All the while the two had been conversing, Z1 had been looking at Laura with a blank expression, the android’s biometric scanners doing a rather ‘thorough’ inspection of the girl’s physiology, as well as any records of her that may exist in the various archives within the earth sphere. Perhaps some things she said piqued the robot’s curiosity, and being the superintelligent AI that she was, perhaps it was only natural for her to indulge her inherent curiosity.

There was precious little that Z1 would be able to find. No such person existed anywhere within Directory database that would fit the person standing before them. However there were links to be found that linked Laura Woodweaver into two different mercenary companies. Deucalion Duet and Deucalion Duo. Both groups accepted similar contracts - that was to say they didn't seem to have any faction that they weren't willing to humor.

There were a few short, rather shoddily filmed footages to be found of them in action, both Deucalion Duet and Duo fielding the same Mobile Weapons each time.

In one clip in particular one of the Deucalion Duet advertised themselves in the middle of combat, much to the chagrin of her comrade the voice unmistakably Laura's.

The biometric scan was more forthcoming, revealing that the tail and ears were entirely organic and had been part of her since her conception, and that despite her looking like being barely out of her teens, if even that, she was around 40 years old.

Laura for her part didn't care much for Z1, giving the android - for what else could she be, with her body language or lack thereof - an idle glance before returning her gaze back to Farron.

"I've been told that before, though in much less of a complimentary manner! Perhaps I would, but filling page after page with nothing but words would be excruciatingly boring. Drawing and painting are much more satisfactory and liberating ways to spend one's time with paper and screen than writing." She mused.

"And it's definitely good that you've no interest in holding and imprisoning others, especially me! It would be an infuriating experience since I am as slippery as a fox!" Laura winked, giving Farron the dais.

Farron finished off the last of the coffee in the can and tossed it at a nearby trash can. It bounced off the rim backwards and fell into the trash with a satisfying ‘clink’.

“Perhaps picture books are up your alley then. Or maybe comics.”

Farron turned back to Laura and gave a grin.

Z1 upon having finished her scanning, blinked twice and glanced to Farron and then to Laura. The woman was a peculiar creature, her biometrics honestly a first for Z1. Nothing of her kind was found commonly in any records she searched, but the completely natural ears and tail, along with her surprisingly youthful body, it seemed hard to call her ‘human’ exactly, despite the similarities. As for the other records, she kept those on file to show to Farron later. She was far from an ‘ordinary nobody’.

Not that they were either.

“Trust me, I’m glad too. Chasing tails is hardly what I’d like to do in my free time.”

He continued, though ironically he was chasing a different kind of tail at the moment as well.

“Z, we have time, yes? Can you make a reservation at The Chengdu Duck?”

“Query: For what time?”

Z1 spoke for the first time. It was a beautiful voice with a sense of maturity to it, but also the faintest hint of a vocoded tone.

“We can make it there in 10 minutes? Ten from now then.”

He looked to Z1 then back to Laura.

“Are you interested? It's a Michigan 3-Star Chinese restaurant. I hear their Kung Pao Chicken is to die for. Never been but I’ve only heard good things.”

He stood up and looked down at Laura, now dwarfing her in size.

“My treat. Consider it a sign of friendship.”

Laura craned her neck in order to look Farron into the eyes. "Ow. My neck. My poor aching old joints, you murderer." She deadpanned before taking a step backwards so the angle wasn't quite as bad.

Before... fanning her face with her tail. "And oh my, being asked out for a date by a man I just met? With it being my first time to boot?" She sighed daintily, bringing a hand to her cheek. "What would my parents think were a lady such as I to say yes? To their precious and innocent darling princess being taken by a hooligan in a suit?"

Probably how its about time and how they want grandchildren to fawn over. Would say it out loud too if they were alive.

She followed Farron's lead, finished her drink and threw it to the same trash can, the waste flying in a high arc into it. "Well, who am I to say no if you're not worried about something as frivolous as your image, bringing someone with this attire to a fine establishment for refined people? Sounds like fun."
